Motivating myself..

I took Thursday as a day off and then yesterday I went back out to Balboa Park to do a 45 minute run. During my run I decided it was a good day to start incorporating hills into my run. I wasn't in the mood for "hill repeats," but my runs have been somewhat "rolling," not completely flat like during Ironman Florida training, but, enough of an incline that my legs are working.

Yesterday, I ran a regular run for 40 minutes and there is a huge hill that descends down right by the zoo, next to the Naval hospital and it zigzags back and forth on a marked trail. I've done the hill once before, but it's kind of short, but pretty steep. So, I thought it would be a good challenge to end my run that way. Starting small, I know, but I was proud of myself for wanting to do it! I started my descent and it's hard to keep your footing because there are a lot of switchbacks. I made it to the bottom, hit my watch to time my run up the hill and kept going. I finished at the top and my legs felt great, but I was breathing hard..really hard! It took me about 2 minutes and 18 seconds to run up it!

I thought it would take me five minutes to run back up it! So, what I think i'm going to do is track how I do over time on that hill. Obviously there are other hills in my future, but I want to see how I progress on this particular one.

This morning, whenever Dave wakes up =0, we're going to go back to Balboa Park and I think I'll jog around a little, but i'm going to try to do hill repeats this morning. I'll do the same hill I did yesterday, cross the street and then run up on a trail right across from it, so just do that back and forth. I haven't done that, so i'm not sure what traffic will look like, hopefully I won't be so dazed from my run that I get hit by a car! =0.

I have some time here, Dave doesn't get a chance to sleep in...ever...since he is up at 4:45 during the week for residency, works about 12-14 hours a day and then he's usually on call one day on the weekend. So, it's almost 9:30 and he's sound asleep......i'll see if I can go wake him up for a run!

:D

I can picture those specific hills. It's been 20+ years, but I know where they are. What a beautiful place to run.

Hey Bill! Just read part of your blog....I hope you have a wonderful holiday and hopefully you stay safe while you're out in the sand next Summer. My husband was in Fallujah from 8/04-3/05...not a fun place to be. Thank you for your service!

Hey girl! I am so jealous that you get to run with Amanda! Lucky you! It sounds like you are doing awesome! I rarely hold an 8 min mile on any of my runs. Way to go!!!
